In Mycelium Running (Ten Speed Press 2005), Stamets explores the use and applications of fungi in bioremediation—a practice called mycoremediation. Stamets details methods of termite and ant control using nontoxic mycelia, and describes how certain fungi may be able to neutralize anthrax, nerve gas, and smallpox.

Through the course of my life I have tried to get a better understanding of myself by mirroring my image to that of machines. While our tools are created for a specific purpose, we do not have the same luxury. These questions caused me to create a heavy and sometimes worrisome dependency towards technology. This installation is a reflection on this increasing dependency and all the frustrations that came with it.

Door de loop van de jaren heb ik geprobeerd mezelf beter te begrijpen door mijzelf te vergelijken met machines. Terwijl ons gereedschap weet waar het voor gemaakt is, ervaren wij niet dezelfde luxe. Technologie veranderde langzamerhand niet alleen in een hulpmiddel, maar ook in een onderwerp van discussie. Dit resulteerde in een heftige en soms zorgwekkende afhankelijkheid met technologie. Deze installatie is een reflectie op deze toenemende afhankelijkheid en alle frustraties die daarmee gepaard kwamen.
